This fall, the city of Troy will be holding several events on the downtown Square, including free concerts, Troy football watch parties and a Halloween night for children.
“We host the downtown fall parties to offer the community some fun, entertaining activities that they can attend and participate in,” said Leigh Ann Windham, coordinator for fall events with the city of Troy. “We also want to introduce people to downtown Troy and all it has to offer.”
Events and activities are open to all Troy community members, including college students, families and professionals working within the city.
The fall parties kicked off Saturday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m., with a watch party for the Troy-Southern Miss football game.
It was sponsored by Aaron’s and Troy Cable, and the city invited students to come early, shop and dine in the various downtown boutiques and restaurants. Due to weather, the watch party did not take place.
Johnny Barron & the Waterfall Band, a bass-centered blues jazz band, held a concert downtown Friday, Sept. 23, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Faith Monrue, a freshman athletic training major from Smiths Station, went to the concert. She said it was her first time downtown.
“I enjoyed the concert and even like to dance to the beats of the music,” Monrue said.
Matthew Bourgeois, a freshman exercise science major from Smiths Station, said the concert was “rocking” and he plans on visiting future events.
“The concert was so thrilling that I could not miss (it),” Bourgeois said.
Madeline Harper, a freshman nursing major from Phenix City, said the concert was fun and it turned out well.
“The band played a variety of songs which touched the heart of every person among the crowd,” Harper said.
Other concerts to be held include Kane & The Catalina Saints on Oct. 14 from 7 to 11 p.m. and Casual on Nov. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Kane & the Catalina Saints, based in Dothan, categorizes its sound as “Southern soul” music, blending characteristics of both the soul and blues music genres.
According to the band’s bio, “Singer-songwriter Kane Meredith from Troy integrates members Joseph Buggs III, Kenneth Baskin and P.J. Muller to form an unstoppable collaboration of professional musicians.”
“We try to book bands whose music will appeal to most people,” Windham said. “We are super excited to have them (the bands), and we hope that all of the students, faculty and community will come out and enjoy them.”
The Troy-South Alabama football game will be televised on the Square on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
The fall events wrap up on Saturday, Oct. 29, with Pumpkins Around the Square from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event is geared toward children from the Troy community, but Windham said all are invited and welcome to shop downtown and participate in the activities of the evening.
“We encourage Troy students to come to downtown for events, shopping, dining and entertainment,” Windham said.
“And we welcome suggestions from the students regarding downtown, including what kinds of businesses they would like to see and what type of events that would like to attend.”
